Dr Victoria McBride provides a GP’s practical guide to the challenges of “the winter slump”.
Shorter days, colder weather, endless to-do lists — it is no surprise many of us feel drained by December. As a GP, I see this every year: the “winter slump.”
Sometimes it is mild low mood; sometimes it is full-on seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Either way, it is real — and manageable.
Why we feel a little ‘off’ in winter
Less sunlight means less serotonin and vitamin D. We exercise less, see fewer friends, and our sleep patterns shift. Add financial pressure or family stress, and your mental health takes a hit.
My top five GP approved fixes
- Get outside daily. Even 15 minutes of daylight helps reset your body clock.
- Move more. Walk, dance, stretch — activity releases endorphins that literally fight off low mood.
- Eat and sleep like you care. Regular meals and consistent sleep times matter more than you think.
- Say no when you need to. Overcommitting is a fast track to burnout.
- Talk early. If low mood lasts more than two weeks, or you feel hopeless, speak to someone — friend, counsellor, or GP.
When to book a GP appointment
If you notice:
- Sleep completely disrupted
- Loss of pleasure in things you usually enjoy
- Constant anxiety or irritability
- Thoughts of self-harm
Please don’t brush it off as “just winter.” We can help — through medical review, blood tests (like checking vitamin D or thyroid), or referring to talking therapies.
