Glow from Within

Your skin can reflect what is happening inside your body

At Courtyard Health Clinic, we are delighted to be collaborating with Glow Studio by Suzanne Wilson to offer a more holistic approach to skin health and wellbeing.

Many people invest significant time and money into skincare products and treatments, but sometimes the skin is trying to tell us something important about what is happening internally. While aesthetic treatments can play a valuable role in skin confidence and maintenance, persistent skin, hair or nail concerns can occasionally reflect an underlying medical issue that deserves proper assessment.

This collaboration brings together experienced aesthetic care with doctor-led medical assessment to help look at the bigger picture.

When skin concerns may be more than skin deep
As a GP, I regularly see patients whose skin changes are linked to underlying health conditions, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalance, inflammation, stress, or systemic disease.

Common examples include:

Iron deficiency

Low iron levels can contribute to:
– Pale skin
– Hair thinning or increased hair shedding
– Dry skin
– Cracked corners of the mouth
– Fatigue and poor concentration alongside skin changes

Iron deficiency is particularly common in women of menstruating age, but it can affect anyone.

Thyroid dysfunction
Both underactive and overactive thyroid conditions can affect the skin and hair.

Symptoms may include:
– Dry or coarse skin
– Hair thinning
– Brittle nails
– Puffiness around the eyes
– Increased sweating
– Changes in skin texture

Sometimes skin changes are one of the earliest clues that thyroid function needs investigated.

Hormonal changes
Hormones can have a major impact on the skin at all stages of life.

Acne, pigmentation, hair growth changes and skin dryness can all be linked to hormonal fluctuations including:
– Perimenopause and menopause
– Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
– Stress hormone imbalance
– Changes following pregnancy

Vitamin deficiencies and nutrition
Deficiencies in nutrients such as vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D and zinc may contribute to changes in skin quality, nail strength and hair growth.

Diet, gut health, stress levels and restrictive eating patterns can all play a role.

Stress, sleep and wellbeing
Chronic stress and poor sleep can significantly affect the skin barrier and inflammatory pathways within the body.

Stress may worsen conditions such as:
– Acne
– Rosacea
– Psoriasis
– Eczema
– Hair loss

Sometimes improving overall wellbeing has a surprisingly positive impact on skin health.

Courtyard Health Clinic and Glow from within

What the appointment involves

Patients attending through the Glow Studio by Suzanne collaboration are offered a 30-minute GP appointment at a special reduced rate (promotional code available through Suzanne)

The consultation includes:
– A detailed discussion around skin, hair, hormonal and wellbeing concerns
– Assessment of medical history and lifestyle factors
– Consideration of whether underlying blood tests or investigations may be appropriate
– Personalised medical advice and next steps

Where clinically appropriate, blood tests can be arranged to look for common underlying causes. Blood tests are charged separately and are not included within the appointment fee.

Further investigations, referrals or ongoing GP support can also be arranged where needed.

Access to specialist dermatology support
We can also arrange review with Polly Buchanan, Consultant Nurse Dermatologist and Independent Prescriber. Polly specialises in complex inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, rosacea or acne as well as mole and lesion checks.

This allows patients to access experienced dermatology input alongside broader GP assessment where appropriate.

Looking at the bigger picture
Skin health is not simply about appearance. The skin is the body’s largest organ and can often provide important clues about overall health and wellbeing.

At Courtyard Health Clinic, we believe healthcare works best when it is thoughtful, personalised and preventative.

Sometimes glowing skin starts from within.
